Abstract

This paper presents a brief introduction to IEEE 802.11 based networks, specifically, on ad-hoc wireless networks. A simulation model of the medium access layer was developed to determine user throughput and mean packet delay as the offered network load and the mean packet length of messages were varied. Deterministic and Poisson arrival rates were used. Simulation results show that a packet length of 300-500 bytes minimizes the mean packet delay and maximizes the user throughput.
