Abstract

This paper concerns the problem of quantitative analysis of the difference between two images in general and two character images in particular. The proposed model is a mesh of locally-interconnected electrostatic or charged particles. We have developed an relaxation procedure and demonstrate the behavior and the result of the preliminary prototype using handwritten digit images. A mesh model describes a standard shape or a simple average of an object pattern, and it is deformed to fit input images. During the process we evaluate the models in terms of elastic energy introduced by the electrostatic force, analyze the resulting deformation field, and try to compare several matching criteria for the ultimate character recognition application.
