Abstract

The purpose of this work is to explore the potential in merging computers with optical holography to create auto-stereoscopic (naturally viewable) three-dimensional (3-D) images in space. Two possible paths are established as a means for integration of computers into a 3-D holographic display system. The first path deals with using the computer to mathematically recreate the interference pattern stored in a conventional hologram. This method is referred to as a computational approach. The alternate path is concerned with combining a computer controlled output display device, such as an LCD screen, with conventional holographic film. This method utilizes digitally stored two-dimensional (2-D) images as the objects in a conventional hologram recording process. This method is referred to as a graphical approach. For this research, a physical optics laboratory was established for conducting conventional and computer based holography experiments. The conclusions drawn from the study include a determination of which computer based holography techniques are suited for particular applications, as well as an assessment of the current limitations and challenges experienced in the existing technology.
