Abstract

: The ProgrammingLand MOO, an online resource for instruction in introductory programming, is described from the student's perspective. This system may be used as a powerful supplement to a traditional classroom course or it may be used as a stand-alone online learning resource. The system delivers instructional content, monitors student progress, provides interactive exercises and gives individual programming assignments to the students. In the fall semester of 2003 an experiment was performed that attempted to evaluate the effectiveness of ProgrammingLand in a classroom course used in place of a textbook. The results were positive. A summary of the experiment and its result are given.
