Professional development of teachers, In-service education, Science education, ICT use in education
Altogether 31 science teachers from six municipalities all over the country joined together in autumn 2000 to establish The Finnish Virtual School for Science Education (FVSSE) with the aim of developing models of using information and communication technologies (ICT) in science education and of helping science teachers in their efforts to develop science education. Altogether 13 two-day seminars, with computer conferences between the seminars, were organised over a three-year period. Collaboration, reflection, contextuality and planning small teaching experiments together were typical features of this professional development project. The self evaluation data showed that teachers adopted different kinds of ICT use and integrated ICT in various ways into science education. Moreover, teachers' ICT competence increased.
