Abstract

Plant layout plays an important role in the design of new process plants or in retrofit projects for existing plants as construction costs as well as operating and maintenance costs are highly influenced by the plant layout. The Process Plant Layout (PPL) problem involves decisions concerning the spatial allocation of equipment items and required connections among them. The resulting mathematical models are combinatorial optimisation problems which usually require significant computational effort for their solution. New solution approaches offering shorter solution times thus making larger scale problems possible to solve is therefore a matter of great relevance. In this paper an efficient decomposition approach to large scale PPL problems is presented and evaluated.
