Abstract

This study is the first stage in a longer-term program in which the authors are working with an Australian Bank to improve its software development risk management practices. The sub-process under study is the stable delivery of large software changes that are developed independently in organisational sub-units but present a larger risk when installed into an integrated production environment. System Dynamics methods were employed to define the current operational paradigm. The application of this methodology has made visible the reasons for deficiencies in the clarity of goal states and feedback loops. The nature of the productivity metrics that are currently being developed around these practices is also challenged. An approach to the future study and modelling of these issues is also offered.
