Metro Ethernet, MAN, RPR, SONET, SDH, MPLS.
Today, Ethernet is widely deployed in enterprise Local Area Networks, and is now emerging as the access interface of choice for delivery of data services in the Metro. The European Union (EU) project Ethernet Switching at Ten gigabit and Above (ESTA) has among its objectives a study of Ethernet services in the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN). This paper discusses Metro Ethernet services such as point-to-point and multipoint-to-multipoint services. Furthermore, different technologies for deployment of Ethernet services including pure Ethernet, SONET/SDH, RPR and MPLS, are presented and compared.
