Ti-Ag alloys, cytocompatibility, thermal oxidation, temperature
This study examined the cytocompatibility of implants materials Ti-Ag alloys, of which mechanical and electrochemical superiority to cp-Ti or Ti6Al4V were verified.[1] The MTT test for L-929, the fibroblast connective tissues, and proliferation test for MC3TC-E1, the osteoprogenitor cells were performed on cp-Ti, Ti6Al4V, and Ti-Ag alloys thermally oxidized at selected temperatures for different durations. The MTT test showed 100% of cell viability in Ti-Ag alloys, which explained the slightest adverse effect of ions released concerned. In the proliferation test, the cell population was roughly increased as cultivation proceeded. The temperature, not duration, affected considerably thermal oxidation behavior and its effect on biocompatibility of specimens. Ti-Ag alloys treated at 600 showed better cytocompatibility and surface morphology than Ti or Ti6Al4V for short-term biocompatibility tests.
