Modern off-the-shelf learning management systems are mostly based on the Web paradigm. If external learning resources have to be integrated into a course, it stands to reason that Web protocols can be applied as well. But collaboration can be diffcult when courses need to access a complex legacy application. This article suggests a flexible and easy-to-use approach for a services-oriented integration of third-party external resources into an existing learning environment. After identifying the necessary services, the authors discuss several existing technologies and assess their suitability. Finally, the conception is applied to an existing Java-based WBE software using JavaServer Pages technology and SOAP-based Web Services.
