Development and Implications of an Integrated E-Learning System

Abstract

An efficient e-Learning system should provide learners with a learning environment that has a high degree of freedom. In order to realize this, e-Learning systems must be equipped with such functions as letting learners themselves choose appropriate learning content and understand correctly their level of progress and achievement for each learning content. From this point of view, we have been developing an integrated e-Learning environment called RAPSODY. RAPSODY integrates learning history and learning content information as learning information and utilizes them to control each learner’s learning. RAPSODY is based on the Learning Ecological Model (LEM) and implements Learning Object Metadata (LOM), which contains features of learning contents. Thanks to the use of LOM for multi layer granularity of course, section, and page, teachers can construct learning contents with granularity as they wish. This paper first describes functions of RAPSODY and then reports a case study of putting them into practice with a course held in our graduate school.
