Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a very promising tech nology for the next generation optical Internet with respect to more efficient bandwidth utilization in optical networks, and with a great potential for an efficient integration of IP and WDM technologies. However, several critical is sues still need to be solved in OBS networks such as con tention resolution without optical buffering as it is a key determinant of burst-loss performance. Deflection Rout ing is the dominant technique to resolve contention in op tical burst-switched networks without requiring additional costly equipment. In this paper, we investigate the influ ence of network load and the traffic load balancing on the efficiency of the deflection routing strategies, in terms of burst dropping probability. We compare three different de flection routing strategies, including a new one, the Least Loaded Node strategy, combined with some traffic net work load balancing. It turns out to be a fairly efficient deflecting routing strategy in comparison with the classical Shortest Path: reduction of the burst loss rate can go up to 56 % on some large networks. Simulations were performed on four topologies, two variants of EONET (European Op tical NETwork), as well as the German and Italian optical networks, with accurate traffic models.
