Abstract

Turbo codes mark one of the most important developments in coding theory. The systematic component of a terminated recursive systematic convolutional code used as a constituent code in turbo codes provides a built-in cyclic redundancy check (CRC). In this paper we show that this built-in CRC can be used in conjunction with an external CRC to reduce the redundancy required for error detection or enhance error detection performance.
