Abstract

A simple Energy Conservation (EC) scheme for a wire less environment illustrates how the asymmetry between the reach of a mobile node’s transmission and the distance from which such a node can receive or, simply, sense the medium, can produce misleading conclusions regard ing the effectiveness of efficiency enhancement propos als in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs). First, a data-link layer energy conservation scheme is presented which is based on the IEEE 802.11 standard. Encourag ing simulation–based performance results are presented. Subsequently, the impact of the, frequently ignored, Ex tended Carrier Sense (ECS) is investigated, demonstrat ing a profound effect on the performance of the proposed scheme, and, providing a cautionary tale about the im portance of realism in wireless environment simulations.
