In this paper, we review the system configurations and performance of high-speed digital optical transmission using sub-carrier multiplexing (SCM). Single-side-band optical modulation at the transmitter can be used to significantly decrease dispersion penalty and increase the optical bandwidth efficiency. SCM system using different types of optical receivers will be discussed and impact of fiber nonlinearity and polarization mode dispersion will also be addressed.
