Abstract

Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is an emerging technology that allows variable size optical data bursts to be transported directly over DWDM links without O/E/O conversion. However, OBS networks rely on wavelength conversions to provide statistical multiplexing performance. The cost of wavelength converters will remain expensive in foreseeable future, making the cost to deploy OBS network prohibitively high. In this paper, we propose a novel variant of optical burst switching called Multi-Lane Optical Burst Switching (ML-OBS). The proposed ML-OBS does not need wavelength conversions while providing performance comparable to traditional OBS. By eliminating the need for wavelength converters, ML-OBS brings OBS networks closer to a real deployment.
