Abstract

This paper is devoted to the expert knowledge gained while teaching programming. Detailed specification of this expert knowledge and the skills necessary to improve the programming capabilities of students is presented. Several aspects of knowledge representation in order to enhance the learning process are considered as well. The research yielded some insightful results on the evolvement of student capabilities in problem solving which includes the aspect of understanding, its different transformations, and the implementation of a corresponding software program. The investigation is oriented on the possibilities given in distance education and founded on the experience gathered in several international projects. CASE and related tools are not within the area of consideration in this research, it concentrates merely on classical programming i.e. the production of code/software.
