Direct volume rendering, Volume ray casting, High quality, Sampling
Volume ray casting needs a higher sampling rate when the combined frequency of the volume and transfer function is high to reduce artifacts. Pre-integration is introduced to resolve this problem. While it enables high-quality volume rendering, it cannot support interactive and real-time visualization for gigantic amount of data to be preprocessed. Extreme point and inflection point sampling (EPIPS) samples the data that most important in approximating the reconstruction value, thus, effectively reducing the computational cost. Experiment results demonstrate that EPIPS achieves in 10% to 20% sample reduction, while having comparable quality and fidelity of visualization with previous approaches, and improvement in several features.
