Recently, owing to the characteristics of mobile technology such as ubiquity, smaller size, and comparatively cheaper prices, and the widespread use of wireless networks, more and more researchers are exploring new educational applications of mobile technology. Yet, very few studies have addressed the application of mobile technology for supporting student teaching. This study investigates how to apply mobile technology to assist Taiwanese student teachers in effectively performing tasks and in learning to be competent teachers. A prototype of a support system for student teachers called Adaptive Support System Initiated for Student Teachers, ASSIST, was developed according to results of a focus group with five student teachers. Another thirteen student teachers were recruited to test the system prototype. This article presents the system design and evaluation results. Further revision and the corresponding evaluation plan based on the student teachers’ responses are also proposed.
