Abstract

Due to the demands for active control systems that can enhance the driving performance, active type of all-wheel drive (AWD) systems has attracted interest recently. Technology has caused significant changes in these systems, especially electronically controlled active differentials. Limited-slip differentials (LSDs) can transfer torque to the wheels with the most traction. This paper offers a method to model an AWD vehicle with LSDs. We compare the behaviour of the drivetrain with two different types of differentials: open- and limit-slip differential. Experimental results demonstrate that LSDs, locking differentials, or couplings with torque management capability increase the ability to transfer torque between the front and rear wheels, allowing the wheels to travel at different speeds.
