Reliable and affordable long-term home-care system is becoming increasingly important as China enters the aging society. In addition to the elderly other types of patient, especially the ones with chronic diseases can also benefit from such a system. This paper presents a successful design of one such system. The proposed system is based on a wireless sensor network. It uses GAINSJ nodes and pulse sensors to collect and transmit the physiological data of patients. It includes onsite management software that would collect, display, process and ultimately trans- fer the information to remote servers. Information on the remote servers is easily accessible through the installed computer network. Additionally, the proposed system improves and simplifies the exist- ing methods of extracting the characteristic parameters of collected data. Experiments are designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system. The collection and transmission of pulse data are simulated on MATLAB using both the arithmetic mean filter algorithm and the simplified threshold algorithm. The results show the proposed method improves the feasibility of simplified threshold algorithm.
