Abstract

Recently, we are witnessing high advancement in the robotics field. However, the barrier to entry level to the robotics world remains very high, because it requires technical knowledge in several fields such as electronics and coding. Therefore, various efforts are being made to make creating robots simpler and enable a larger audience to enter this area. This paper presents a brief overview on these efforts and an initiative to promote the Internet of Things by proposing an intuitive low-cost prototyping platform based on recycled electronics. The proposed solution is composed of a recycled smartphone and IOIO board, the latter gives to the smartphone the capability to be interconnected with hardware modules and sensors. The proposed solution makes the robots’ programming easier through Blockly’s open-source visual programming interface. The paper also illustrates how to simplify electronics and programming tasks to make them easy to use for beginners and children.
