Abstract

Peat fuel is a biomass energy resource, abundant in Canada, which provides important economic and environmental advantages over traditional fossil fuels, and is receiving consideration as an alternative fuel for coal-burning electricity generating stations. Peat fuel is low in sulphur, mercury and ash content and, with the development of improved harvesting and dewatering technologies, can be produced with calorific values comparable to lignitic or subbituminous coals. Wet harvesting and combustion of peat fuel can provide GHG emission reduction benefits. The Province of Ontario has extensive measured resources of peat sufficient to satisfy current demands for biomass fuels.
