Abstract

An agent-based biological immune system (BIS) approach for adap- tive health evaluation and control to a distributed manufacturing monitoring system is proposed. The presented approach establishes an immune monitoring model of a manufacturing system by exhibit- ing desirable immune characteristics, such as adaptation, immune recognition, immune memory and self-organization. In the BIS- based structural model, a group of autonomous agents mimic im- mune cells (such as B-cells) in BIS, have local interactions with mon- itoring environment and deal with emerging problems by simulating immune responses. Simulating the biological immune mechanism is able to monitor, diagnose and learn the faults. The methods of recognition and evaluation of fault antigens are proposed which can be used to coordinate and control the manufacturing system. The physical simulation platform for biological immune-inspired moni- toring system has been developed. The experimental results show the feasibility of using this approach for real-time health monitoring and coordination control of manufacturing system.
